Starting January 2017, Lyon County Environmental Dept. and Advance Opportunities began a partnership to disassemble and recycle mattresses. This new venture will keep recyclable materials out of our local landfill and save money on wasted landfill air space, while supporting another important mission: competitive employment opportunities for local adults with disabilities. What this means for all of us is reflected in Advance Opportunities’ vision of a society where all people are an integral part of their communities in which their abilities, not their disabilities, are recognized and valued.
To help jump start recycling efforts, Lyon County Environmental Dept. received a grant through MN Pollution Control Agency and together with Advance Opportunities, will help market these services to our region. Mattress recycling will take place at the Lyon County Fairgrounds in Marshall, MN (in the old hockey arena building) 4 days/week with 6-8 employees rotating part-time shifts throughout the week. On an average day, 10-12 mattresses will be recycled with an estimate of 3,500 mattresses/year! Click here to see How It Works
